Arc de Triomphe Details
Arc de Triomphe is one of Paris most famous landmarks, and its position at the western end of Avenue des Champs lysées. A very popular area for boutiques and restaurants, Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile is the world's largest triumphal arch. It magnificently forms the backdrop over the very impressive urban sights of Paris. This monument stands at the centre of Place Charles de Gaulle at the confluence of 12 main avenues of Paris. Stood on the crest of elevated ground, Arc de Triomphe can be seen all along the Champs Elysées, from the Tuileries gardens to the Obélisque de Luxor.
Primarily, the Triumphal Arch celebrates the might demonstrated by the French during the Napoleonic wars, as well as honoring the casualties of the French Revolution. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from the First World War is located beneath Arc de Triomphe. At the bottom of the Arc's pillars are four grand sculptural groups by several different French sculptors.
Designed by Jean Chalgrin in 1806, Arc de Triomphe is the most impressive arch in a series that run from the courtyard of the Louvre to Grande Arch de la Défense. Inspired by Romes Arch of Titus, Arc de Triomphe was the largest triumphal arch in the world for almost two centuries, until the North Koreans constructed the Arch of Triumph in Pyongyang in 1982. There is a small museum inside the arch that conveys the history of this monument through engaging multimedia presentations.
