The Montparnasse area is found on the left bank of the Seine in Paris. This area has been a part of the citys 14th arrondissement since 1860 and is best known for its intimate ties to the early 20th century artistic movements within the city. It is within this district that artists like Degas, Manet and Jean Cocteau lived and thrived. The district was a gathering place of sorts for writers, poets, composers, painters and sculptors from all over the world who gathered at communes within the Montparnasse area.Other attractions in the area include the Montparnasse Cemetery, which is the final resting place of Charles Baudelaire and Jean-Paul Sarte, and the Pasteur Institute. Beneath the ground in the Montparnasse district are portions of the tunnels from the original catacombs of Paris.
