To the north of Boulogne on the English Channel coast, the small French village of Wissant is found. This tiny fishing village is the last location in France where the wooden flobart fishing boats are still used. Under English rule, it was also a major port for traveling between the two countries. The location is subject to major winds, which have caused major shifting of the sand dunes in the lagoon. But those same winds have led to the village’s reputation as the surfing ‘mecca’ of France.

While in the village, visit the church of St. Nicholas. The quaint church was built in the 15th century. Two manor houses built in the 17th century can be visited, as can the Typhonium, which was built in the style of Egyptian architecture. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery makes for a sobering visit, and reminds the visitor of the area’s more solemn history. Whether surfing or looking for a quiet escape from more visited towns, cheap hotel options in Wissant are available. EasyToBook.com lists the best discount hotel choices in the area.
