Museums have always been great parts of the tourism of any town and city. In fact, they are among the most frequented attractions in any place and can contribute quite a lot of revenues to the tourism trade. Because of this, it can be said that the Musee Bargoin is definitely one of the major contributors in the tourism of Clermont-Ferrand.

Located then in the old hospital Charitains, the museum first opened its doors to the public in the year 1860. It presented the collections gathered by scholar JB Bouillet. However, it was transferred to the building where it is housed now in the year 1903, which was constructed through the bequest of JB Bargoin. At present, the museum is the home of collections pertaining to archaeology, which dates back to prehistory up to the early days of Christianity. The collections in the museum, which include Grecian ceramics, Etruscan and Gallo-Roman pieces as well as items from the Augustonemetum excavations of the remains of the Mercury Temple and the ex-voto of Chamalieres source rock, makes it as among the attractions that are part and parcel of the tourism of Clermont-Ferrand.
