Bayonne is a beautiful town with a population of 44,300 inhabitants. There are many historically significant structures in Bayonne that attract thousands of tourists every weekend. Bayonne is the capital of the Basque county, with magnificent churches and excellent museums. The most important church in Bayonne is the splendid Cathédrale de Ste-Marie which was founded in the 13th century when the British took control of the town. If you are interested in museums, Bayonne has many wonderful museums, including the Musée de la Mer, Musée Basque and the excellent art museum of Musée Bonnat where you can find important works of famous artists such as Van Dyck, Botticelli, El Greco, Turner, Rubens and many others. On the 1st week of August, the town of Bayonne holds a festival called the Fetes de Bayonne.
