Banyuls-sur-Mer is a lovely village in the foothills of the Pyranees mountains, in the Languedoc-Roussillon. This is a particularly beautiful area of France, as it is where the Pyranees foothills meet the ocean. The steep cliffs here make for beautiful vistas. Historically, Banyuls-sur-Mer was known as a smuggling town, as many goods going to and from Spain could be smuggled through Banyuls-sur-Mer without consequence. Today, however, Banyuls-sur-Mer is known more for its wines, particularly Banyuls de la Marenda. The Grenache grapes that make this sweet wine grow on the steep hillsides of the town.
Most of Banyuls-sur-Mer’s tourist activity is centered around its wineries. The village is very charming and offers exciting daytime adventures like deep sea diving and wind surfing. There is also a nice museum called Maillol in the city. The evening brings activities such as fine restaurants, discotheques and traditional Catalan dances.
