Provence and the Côte d’Azur is a province of wilderness in the Massif des Maures and deep blue waters along the coast. Var, within the province, is a region of many sights and activities. The Abbaye de Thoronet is one of the famed "Three Sisters" of Provence. Hyèrese is a health resort on the coast while St. Tropez is a popular resort for those who like to see and be seen. St. Tropez attractions, beside the beach and the famous people, are the landing sites for World War II and its naval museum. You can also leave the mainland for several small islands. The Îles d’Hyères (Islands of Gold) offer everything from beaches to rare vegetation to a visit to the oldest naturist resort in France. Toulon, however, is about history. Toulon cultural sites include the Museum of the Art of Toulon, the Museum of Asian Art and the Hôtel des Arts with Provencal paintings. For Toulon attractions, consider the fish market, at one end and Toulon Cathedral at the other. There is also the Marine Museum with its Baroque entrance, the remains of the former gateway to the 17th century city’s arsenal.
