Vidauban, in the Var department of Provence, lies on the banks of the River Argens in the heart of the vineyards of the Argens valley. Itself an old wine-making town, it is overlooked by the Chapel of St Brigitte which stands on an ancient volcano. Vidauban offers a subtle blend of vibrancy and tranquility and you only have to step outside your hotel to find much to do, albeit at a relaxed pace. For those interested in the history of the town, the Saint Pons and Sainte Brigitte chapels, the Chaumes hamlet and the Château d’Astros are all well worth a visit. The château was built in the 12th century by the Templiers and has a beautiful vaulted cellar where you can taste the excellent wine. Vidauban also offers an excellent selection of shops, as well as a Sunday market, and accommodation can easily be found at one of the town’s budget hotels with booking made easy through EasyToBook.com.
Venturing outside the town, the Aille waterfalls in the Maures plain, with their magnificent pink sandstone, are an ideal spot for a picnic. The river Argens offers a wide range of watersports, including canoeing, kayaking and fishing. On the beautiful lake at Les Salles, you can even sail or windsurf over the rooftops of the drowned village.
