Avignon is a historic town located on the left bank of the Rhône River, southeast of Paris. This moderately sized town of 100,000 people is the perfect destination for a vacation during the weekend. Avignon used to be the papal residence for many centuries and the Pope was responsible for the construction of many impressive buildings. The most important of these establishments is the 12th century Palais des Papas which is a massive building surrounded by the medieval walls of Avignon. Along the town walls you will find the Fort St-André, and the 10th century bridges of Pont St Bénézet and the Pont d'Avignon. You can also visit the magnificent 12th century churches of Cathedral of Notre-Dame des Doms and Chartreuse du Val de Bénédiction. If you are in town during the month of July, you are just in time for the Avignon Festival.
