Located in the western Provence region of France, Carpentras is considered one of the larger, and most ancient, cities in the area. Carpentras hotels blend the old with the new by offering some lovely architecture combined with modern amenities. There are many local attractions to keep visitors busy. The Musée Comtadin is an excellent museum to get a feel for the area’s history.
The Palais de Justice is an old building worthy of a look at its architecture. Next door is the Cathédrale St-Siffrein, with an inscribed Roman arch detailing the plight of Jews who were forced to convert to Christianity. They were led through the Porte Juif, which displays a rather strange carving of rats around a globe. There is also a 17th century synagogue with 14th century foundations and its claim is to be the oldest French place of Jewish worship.
