Vivonne Hotels and Accommodation
Vivonne, a small mediaeval town in the French department Vienne, sits on a rocky ledge above the Vonne valley and is known as the “three river city”. The Vonne, Palais, and Clain rivers converge here, and the town offers outstanding fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, and biking. Visit the tourist information office for maps of marked trails that lead you along the rivers, through the town, and around the many historical landmarks. Among the landmarks is the Angevin Gothic Priory Church of Saint-George, built during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries upon the ruins of a much older church. According to legend, St George’s horse landed on this spot after one monumental leap from the Fontrable hills. Across from the church, the rue du Chateau leads directly into the heart of the mediaeval city. Narrow streets lined with tile-roofed homes and shops make for an exciting time of touring, shopping, and sampling the exquisite local cuisine. Before calling it a day, stroll up the rue Michel Lambert along the Palais river. At the end is the old village of Sais and its historic church, Our Lady of Sais-les-Vivonne.
