Esslingen is a city dedicated to preserving the past, and one of the most beautiful parts of this past can be seen in the St. Dionysius City Church. Esslingen has many churches within its borders that are worthy of a visit or two, but the St. Dionysius City Church is undoubtedly the oldest and largest of them all, dating back all the way to the 13th century.
The Church boasts incredible period architecture, with two massive towers that are linked via a span near their apex, and two prominent spires that make for a very distinctive silhouette against the Esslingen skyline. Even more fascinating is that the St. Dionysius City Church was built atop the ruins of an even older church, dating back to the 8th century. Parts of this older establishment have recently been excavated and are available for viewing by visitors who are interested. In addition, visitors to the Church are invited to explore the grounds and marvel at the majesty of the many artifacts and furnishings from the 15th century, including a classical stained glass window, one of the finest in all the country.
