Stuttgart is a city with plenty of great historical attractions to visit, and no trip there can be said to be complete without a stop over in one of the oldest cemeteries in all of Germany; the Hoppenlau Friedhof Cemetery. There are tombs here dating back all the way to the 17th century, with the oldest of all coming from the year of 1628. Those interested in local history and the people who have helped shape Stuttgart over the years will be glad to recognize the many important historical figures buried here.
They include the famous sculptor Johann Heinrich von Dannecker, Wilhelm Hauff, and the famous poet Friedrich Schubart. The cemetery is noteworthy in that it contains its own separate “Jewish section” where Jewish people are buried, as well as an area of the grounds reserved for cremation urns, many of which still contain ashes. Some of the world’s most elaborately designed tombstones can be found here, so it is well worth a visit, even if only for that reason.
