The Abbey near Munich owes its name to Saint Boniface. It owes its existence, however, to King Ludwig of Bavaria (1825-1848). King Ludwig created St. Boniface’s Abbey (Abtei St. Boniface) in an attempt to reverse the previous secularization of the Church and its institutions, in the early 1800s. It was his wish to once again make the country morally responsible and Christian. He felt creating such religious structures and restoring others, would return his people to their faith. It was a valiant effort. Out of it were to arise several elegant and interesting architectural structures - St. Boniface’s Abbey was one of them.
