Karlstor is actually one of the three remaining gothic tower gates that were developed to control entrance to the ancient center of Munich. It is now the main entrance to the most historical part of the city, and is a highly photographed landmark within the city. Budget hotels in Munich near Karlstor offer easy access to both the gate, as well as this fascinating historical area. There are only three of the original gates remaining, which are all accessible by Ring Road. Karlstor is located on the western side of the city, while Isartor is on the east. It is also just a short distance from the Hauptbahnhof railway station, providing easy transportation to other surrounding areas.
