Created with dramatic flourishes and towering turrets, the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) in Munich is a commanding sight. Built between 1867 and 1908, this neo-Gothic building features extravagant detailing both inside and out. Gargoyles, saints, dragons and members of the Wittelsbach family perch on the outside. King Ludwig II admired this lavish style of elaborate turrets and crenellated edges. The dominant feature, however, is the Glockenspiel on the central tower. It is visible from many of the discount hotels near the New Town Hall in Munich.
The Glockenspiel dates from 1904. This series of 43 bells draws crowds daily, as three times a day, the chimes go off, and the doors of the Glockenspiel then open up. Out of them come several characters, the most noted are the jousting knights and the brightly hued dancers. The groups each perform a specific event from Munich’s past. The dancers act out the Schaefflertanz (Dance of the Coopers), which marked the end of the Plague of 1567. The knights engage in the famed tournament of 1568, which took place in this same platz - Marienplatz. After viewing this performance, take a trip up the tower’s elevator. On a clear day, you can see forever - or at least as far as the room of your comfortable bargain hotel near the New Town Hall in Munich.
