Karlstor is actually one of the three remaining Gothic tower gates that were developed to control entrance to the ancient center of Munich. It is now the main entrance to the most historical part of the city, and is a highly photographed landmark within the city. There are only three of the original gates remaining, which are all accessible by Ring Road. Karlstor is located on the western side of the city, while Isartor is on the east. It is also just a short distance from the Hauptbahnhof railway station, providing easy transportation to other surrounding areas.
This massive 14th century gate also marks the Pedestrian Zone. Within the Pedestrian Zone and just inside the gates is the famous Marienplatz, with its shopping, cafes and restaurants and beautiful central fountain. This bustling area of town is ideal for seeing historical buildings, while still enjoying all the modern amenities.
