Karolinenplatz is one of the older squares in the Maxvorstadt district. This square or place, as platz means in German, is different than many others in the city in that it forms a star shape and not a true square. The center of Karolinenplatz is also different in that a huge 95-foot obelisk forms the center focal point of the square. This monument was designed and constructed in 1833, to commemorate the over 30,000 Bavarian soldiers that died in Napoleon's 1812 campaign against Russia.
The Amerika Haus, a cultural meeting place, often hosts speakers and other events of interest to visitors and residents alike. Historical buildings from the years of Nazi rule are also present in Karolinenplatz, as well as the surrounding neighborhoods.
