Also known as the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe University in honor of the famous German writer, the University of Frankfurt is one of the most prestigious institutes of higher learning in all of Germany. For many years, the University was considered the de facto place in Germany to receive an education in the liberal arts. With specialties focusing in philosophy and theology, it was a school that lived up to its namesake’s legacy admirably.
In recent years, however, the University has undergone a shift in its areas of academic expertise, coming to focus more on history, law, and economics. This is in line with their stated goal of the new millennium to become the primary center for learning about finance in all of Germany. However, the University still remains home to the Frankfurt School, widely regarded the world over as one of the best places to learn philosophy. Notable alumni include Erich Fromm, Martin Buber, and Norbert Elias.
