One of the most arresting sights in all of Wismar, the Furstenhof Palace is a must see attraction for the Germany tourist who is looking for something to do that provides one with new insights into the region’s history. The Furstenhof Palace’s first major attraction is its architecture: the building was constructed in the 16th century and is an impressive example of Italian Renaissance building style.
However, the Palace is perhaps best known for what lies within its walls. Numerous friezes and other works of art fill the halls and rooms of the palace, many of them depicting important historical events and stories throughout history. Two of the most infamous depict the Trojan War in all its glory, and the parable of the Prodigal Son with lavish illustrations and masterful use of color. Though it’s an important part of history itself, the Furstenhof Palace remains dedicated to the idea of preserving history for future generations; today, it acts as the archive for the district courts, as well as the city.
