St. Mary’s Church Tower in Wismar, Germany is one of the most unique attractions that a tourist in the country can visit. By turns, it is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture that should appeal to most anybody, and a somber reminder of the more recent, nightmarish parts of the country’s history.
During the heavy bombing that Germany sustained in World War II, many ancient buildings in Wismar were lost, and chief among them was St. Mary’s Church. It was destroyed so badly that reconstruction was deemed largely impossible, and the church was torn down. However, the tower remains standing as a reminder of several things: on one hand, the heights of aesthetic beauty that the country ascending to in the past, and on the other, the terrors of warfare. Although the tower is not open to the public for safety reasons, viewing it from the outside is still an interesting, picturesque and important website.
