For lovers of both natural beauty and wild animals, the Duisburg Zoo is an absolutely essential attraction to visit on your tour of Germany. Widely regarded as one of the best and most innovative zoos in all of Europe, the Duisburg Zoo boasts several distinctions that set them apart from the rest. In the 1950s, they were the first in the whole continent to open up an exhibit exclusively for dolphins, with an appropriate, long-term habitat.
Today, this is something of the Zoo’s main attraction; they hold regular dolphin shows in huge tanks of water, much like Sea World to those who are familiar with that establishment. There are many other sights to see as well, though, including a petting zoo where children can experience many animals firsthand. Recently, the Duisburg Zoo has made headlines for their successful breeding programs that have helped stabilize the dwindling population of the Koala bear.
