A testament to Duisburg’s rich historical culture is the famous Three Gabled House. It is an attraction bound to appeal to the history buff, as well as anyone visiting Duisburg who happens to be looking for something to do. It is considered a historical landmark, not least because of its great age: the building dates back to the early 16th century, and still exists in its original form, with no real modification to speak of.

When it was first established, the Three Gabled House was run by an order of nuns who dwelled there and practiced their faith. Over time, the structure became less and less frequented until it was purchased by a private owner in the early 20th century. Luckily, the magnificent architecture of the house, with its eponymous three gables, survived World War II, and was purchased by the city in order to be preserved for the future in the 1960s. Today, it is a boarding house where local artists live who are working on their scholarships.
