Within easy driving distance of Soest is Paderborn. This is the biggest city in the eastern portion of Westphalia. As if to prove it, the Dom or Cathedral is enormous. The 3-nave Gothic church of St. Mary, St. Liborius and St. Kilan has several intricate carvings both inside and out. At the southern portal (Paradisal), you will see several figures, the Paradies. Inside is a magnificent high altar as well as one of the biggest crypts in Germany. It contains the relics of St. Liborius. There is also the ostentatious memorial tomb of Dietrich von Fürstenberg. Do not miss the delicate tracery depicting 3 hares, part of the elaborate and clever trompe l’oeil window in the cloister. This is the Dreihasenfenster. In complete contrast is the modern Doicese Museum. It contains portable altars and an 11th century Madonna statue of lindenwood.

As overwhelming as the Cathedral may be, there are other attractions of equal merit. Most are within reach of Paderborn hotels. The early 17th century Rathaus contains a natural history museum beneath its 3 ornate gables. The building is a fine example of Weser Renaissance architecture. The Marktkirche is mainly a Baroque basilica with a high altar of wood and gold. You can also leave your hotel in Paderborn to see the patrician Heising’sche Haus. This 17th century mansion was once a Benedictine Monastery. In the afternoon, relax in the Paderquellgebiet. This small park soothes the nerves with its gurgling springs.
