The first mention of the town of Stolberg, North Rhine-Westphalia is in the 12th century. It was and has continued to be an important industrial town, first in brass and then in zinc. The town earned the nickname 'the Copper City’ in reference to the yellow color of brass. The Kupferhofe, or Copper Yards, are interesting to visit for the architecture, but also in order to understand how important the brass industry has been to the town.

Stolberg is divided into two different zones, referred to as Lower Stolberg (Unterstolberg) and Upper Stolberg (Oberstolberg). The majority of the historic sites in town are in Upper Stolberg. You might want to aim to stay in this area when you look for your hotel on EasyToBook.com, but it’s certainly not necessary as there are discount hotels available in several areas. The main landmark of Stolberg is the castle. The structure that stands today was actually built in the 20th century on the same location as the medieval castle once stood. If you stroll to the eastern edge of Stolberg, you can visit the Beck Wehe reservoir (Wehebachtalsperre), and gaze over the surrounding countryside from the lookout point.
