Franconia, or Franken, is a region of rolling agricultural or rural landscape. In Franconia you can see how the heavily wooded areas reach up into the mountains of the Fichtelgebirge. In this region, visit Nuenberg (Nürnberg). Check out Bayreath, Coburg or Bamberg. If you can, stay longer than a weekend, Franconia has a lot to offer its tourists. Franconia, once the kingdom of the Franks, has a long and very rich history. At Coburg, astride a hill overlooking the city, is the Veste Coburg Fortress. It protects the town with its late Gothic or early Renaissance fierceness. In the Kunstsammlungen you can find an art collection featuring furniture, sculpture and the works of such artists as Dürer as well as tournament garb. There is also the Naturkundemuseum (Natural History Museum), the Scholss Ehrenburg (Ducal Palace) and the German Natural History Museum in Nürnberg.
