The fish market in Speyer is not simply an opportunity for one to shop and enjoy the city’s wares. Rather, it is a carefully preserved attraction that affords the visitor to Speyer a unique look into the city’s history and culture, in a way that is fresh and immediate. The city of Speyer was largely supported by its fishing industry in the 16th century, due in large part to its prime location on the Rhine River.
The fish market, then, would have been a key part of town, where most people practiced their trade and earned their living. It would have been a town square for all intents and purposes. By the 19th century, however, the popularity of fishing had been replaced by other, most industrial and profitable pursuits and before long, the fishing industry completely shut down. However, due to its historical significance, the Fish Market has been preserved. It is like an open air museum in many aspects, full of historical sights and even works of art such as sculptures and elaborate fountains.
