While the building itself might not be much to look at when placed next to the other marvelous ruins and palaces of the wonderful city of Trier, the City Library is nevertheless one attraction that visitors to Germany who are looking for something to do that’s edifying will certainly enjoy. Operating as the municipal library of the city, the City Library of Trier features many large collections of ancient books.
Most of these books originally came from monastic libraries in the many abbeys and churches that filled the area. However, when those libraries closed down, their collections were sent to Trier City Library for safekeeping, along with many private collections over the years. Here, visitors can see such famous sights as one of the original Gutenberg Bibles, and 74 miniatures of the famous Trier Apocalypse dating back to the 9th century. For lovers of literature or history, the City Library of Trier is a must see attraction.
