Of all the many town squares in Germany, and even among those which have some interesting historical significance, the Market Square of Trier is easily one of the most beautiful and arresting. The style of the square is very much in the older traditions, which is fitting for the historically rich region of Trier, with a massive Roman column adorning the center of the square, at the market cross.

Being a town square, Market Square is central to all of Trier’s many sights. St. Peter’s fountain can be found here as well, which is certainly an interesting attraction in its own right. Visitors should also be certain to check out the Steipe guesthouse with its fantastic 15th century architecture including massive gabled roofs. Those looking for yet more local history need turn no further than the southern end of the Market Square, where they can visit Germany’s oldest pharmacy, an establish that dates all the way back to the 13th century!
