Once a Neolithic occupation site, the modern town of Bautzen is home to over 40,000 residents of both German and Sorbian descent. Located in far east-central Germany, this historic town has been largely rebuilt since being destroyed in numerous wars, though most recently and severely in World War Two. Hotels in Bautzen are quite affordable as a general rule. Rates are reasonable even just a few blocks from the historic downtown area where you’ll find the local market on the weekend. Bautzen is well known for its miles of biking trails.
Some of the more unique sights include a tour of one or both of the two GDR prisons in town, one of them thought to be political. The local Sorbian Museum has a definitive collection of the Slavic people who live in this area, between the border and Bautzen. Cheap hotels are abundant and there are several to choose from. Online booking sites such as EasyToBook.com make it easy to accomplish this beforehand. For those taking bicycle tours of the region and need lodging at discount hotels, Bautzen has several attractive options. Bautzen hotels certainly do include rather nice abodes, some of which have served as the lodging of nobility in its long and storied past.
