Germany is full of elaborate examples of classical and Baroque architecture that date back hundreds of years. With these, visitors can get a great insight into the country’s deeply rich historical background. However, more modern attractions have their own historical merit as well, especially considering that many of the most interesting parts of German history occurred only just this last century. The Schinkelwache of Dresden is one such attraction, and deserves a visit while you’re in the city.

For the German tourist looking for something to do in Dresden, the Schinkelwache can make an ideal outing. It was originally built in the late 19th century and served for many years as police headquarters and as a guardhouse for defending the city center. It is considered to be a masterwork of Neo-Classical design, with clean lines accented by stately columns. Over time, the rest of modern day Dresden sort of sprung up around the Schinkelwache, and as a result, after it was reconstructed following the bombings of World War II, the building serves today as both a café, and a box office for the neighboring Dresden State Theatre.
