Dresden is a remarkable city full of many sights and wonderful examples of ancient and modern architecture that beg to be seen. It is all the more remarkable, then, that the Semper Opera House remains the single building that is most commonly associated with the city. This reputation, however, is not at all without merit.
The Semper Opera House of Dresden has been destroyed twice in the past, but both times it has been rebuilt in exacting detail that honored the design of the original. It is considered to be one of the world’s foremost examples of Italian Renaissance architecture, as well as one of the most impressively designed theaters in the world as far as acoustics are concerned. Despite its reputation as a historical artifact, the Semper Opera House is still in full swing today with a continuous roster of shows that show off the best of the German artistic tradition. Visitors are invited to come visit the theater for a show, and even to take part in a guided tour that will highlight some of the more fascinating pieces of the opera’s long history.
