Weimar Castle is one of the most historically rich locations that one can visit in all of the Weimar area. For those visitors to German who are looking for something to do that gives them a new perspective on the country’s long and complex history, there are few sights more deserving of their attention. The sight of the Weimar Castle has been occupied by a structure since at least the 11th century, but the Castle that currently stands there is significantly less old than that, dating back “only” to the 16th century.
Since 1923, the castle has functioned as a museum, and as such is even more appealing of an attraction to visitors. The interiors of the palace have been painstakingly restored to their original glory and as such offer a wonderful glimpse at life in past eras, and there are many other works of art on display as well. Perhaps most famously, one can view many of the paintings of Peter Paul Rubens here in a fairly large collection.
