The city of Weimar’s history is inextricably intertwined with the many artists who lived and worked here over the years. However, with all its palaces, museums, galleries, and famous houses in which those artists lived, it’s all too easy to overlook the art itself. Rectifying this problem and offering one of the most magnificent attractions for visitors to the Weimar area is the German National Theater.
Although the current theater has only been here just over a hundred years, the site has been home to the establishment of the Theater for much longer than that, and has seen a lot of events of incredible historical significance over the years. For example, both Franz Liszt and Richard Strauss served as conductors here before beginning their astonishing careers as composers and perhaps most famously of all, Wagner’s most well known opera, Lohengrin, was performed here for the first time. Today, the theater still operates in its own capacity, with a full schedule of shows and attractions that run throughout the entire year.
