Egio Hotels and Accommodation
Egio (also spelled Egion and Aigio) is a small town in the prefecture of Achaea in Greece. Egio is on the north coast of the Peloponnesian Peninsula, overlooking the Gulf of Corinth. A ferry service connects Egio to the opposite shore of the gulf. When you come to a discount hotel in Egio, you are entering the heart of what was Classical Greece. The community of Egio dates back to ancient times. It was once the capital of the Achaean League. It is, in fact, believed to be one of the oldest cities not only in Greece, but also in the Balkans.
If you go down to Egio’s long pier, you get some great views of the sparkling blue water of the harbor and of the town. In the morning you can see the fishermen bring in their catches. Some of those fish will be served up that very day in the town’s excellent seafood restaurants. If you don’t like fish, try the spit-roasted lamb. For swimming, there are excellent beaches just a few minutes’ drive from Egio. You can see the ruins of the ancient city of Helike which was destroyed by an earthquake and tsunami in 373 BC, and only re-discovered in 2000. You can also see ruins that date back to Mycenaean times, including a house and tombs. Of particular interest is the Panagia Tripiti Monastery which is carved right out of rock.
