If you have been hearing some popular songs that refer to Giannia's feats, then you may like to visit the square that was initially named after him, near to a few accomodations in Patras. Although the square is now known as the Marouda square, after the Maroudas family who lived here, there are still many people who will refer to this square as that of Giannia's. If you wish to know more, you can always chat up your Patras hotel friends.

Easily accessible from some of the hotels in Patras, the Marouda Square was first known as the Giannia Square, because it was meant to commemorate the bravery and courage of George Giannias. Also known as Deligiorgi of Giannia, this man was attacked by Turks on April 1821, during the Greeks war for freedom. Although he was asked to surrender, Giannia denied this, which resulted in his death and that of his mates. As such, the name of this war hero will live on forever, making the square that was primarily named after him to become just as famous. As one of the most significant Patras attractions, the square ranks with such others as the Fortress, the Ancient Odeum, the Castle and the St. Andrew's Cathedrral.
