One of the best attractions in Patras that you can find is its Fortress. Constructed during the second half of the 6th century, the fortress stands on the site of the remains of an ancient citadel. As such, you can deduce that like the Castle and Ancient Odeum, the fortress is among the oldest architectural structures in the city. It also shares its popularity as an attraction with the Carnival and the International Festival of Patras.
Located on a hill of Mount Panachaikos, teeming with ramparts and towers, the fortress' other defense also comes from its moats. The materials that were used to install the fortress were from ancient buildings during the B.C. Era. Meant to ward off attackers, the fortress has been used as a part of the defense system of the city, even during World War II. Further, it also has been used as a military and administrative centre in the past.
