While there are many places in Athens that you should visit, there are events in the city that you should look forward to as well. Although not all of these events are historically significant, there are some of them that have histories that date back to many centuries ago. One of these events is the Athens Classic Marathon. Witnessing or taking part in this marathon is one of the things to do in Athens that you should not miss.
Every first Sunday of November, the Athens Marathon, which is one of the things to do in Athens that many people look forward to, is held to commemorate a great historical event in the city. At exactly the same date in 490 BC, Greek Phidippidesa came to Athens to deliver the news that the battle ended with their victory over the Persians. However, after running the whole length of Marathon to Athens, the messenger was only able to say 'nenikikamen', which meant 'we have won', before he died of exhaustion. To show appreciation for the messenger's sacrifice, the annual Athens Marathon was held.
