There many interesting places that you can visit in Athens, and one of these is the Kessariani Monastery. This popular Byzantine monastery, which is situated on Mount Ymittos' forested slopes, can be reached by taking a short drive from the city centre. Offering a pleasant change of scenery from the usual city views, the monastery also offers some of the best sights of Athens.
Protected by a high wall, this monastery, which was erected during the 11th century, was constructed on the remains of a church from the 6th century. During the 16th century, a chapel devoted to St. Anthony was added to the monastery. A bell tower was also added during the 19th century. Aside from offering the best sights of Athens, the monastery also has some great treasures within its walls, some of which are the wall paintings that date way back to the 17th century. These paintings are considered fine examples of religious art in Greece.
