For a journey back to the Classical Age of ancient Greece, book a room in a budget hotel in Piraeus, near Athens. Piraeus has been the port of Athens since ancient times, and has seen a lot of history. The famous Long Walls connected Athens and Piraeus during the ruinous Peloponnesian Wars between Athens and Sparta. Those walls are long gone, but you can learn much about Piraeus of antiquity in the Archaeological Museum. There you can see stunning bronze statues of the goddesses Artemis and Athena, and the god Apollo. The Piraeus Kouros of Apollo dates from 520 BC. In the Hellenic Maritime Museum you can learn the long history of Greek seafaring, from the days of Odysseus to the present. You can even tour a 20th century Greek Naval vessel. Nearby are the remains of the 2nd century BC Theatre of Zea.
