There are many worthwhile things to do in Greece and one of these is definitely visiting the different ancient monasteries in the country. One of these is the Monastery of Daphni, which is named after the “laurel”, which is the favorite plant of the god Apollo. It is said that the site of the monastery was also where an ancient temple of the god stood.
The Monastery of Daphni went through such a long history. It started out only as a small 6th century monastery that was expanded during the 11th century. Although almost all the monastic buildings of the monastery have been destroyed over the years, the church with its distinctive dome still stands. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, this church has seen through quite a number of rebuilding and restoring. Inside, the highlights include the mosaic of the Christ Pantocrator or the Almighty that can be found on the central dome. Other mosaics can be seen around the church as well, among which are the Resurrection and Crucifixion scenes, which can be found on the southern and northern barrel vaults inside the church's main entrance.
