Almost everyone in the world knows of Zeus and as such, any temple that was erected in his name is sure to gain quite a number of visitors. Because of this, the most well known temple of the great god is believed to be the Olympieion or the Temple of the Olympian Zeus, which is also among the attractions in Athens. The construction of this temple was completed within the span of 700 years and it is known that it was emperor Hadrian that saw to its completion.
Started in the 6th century BC and finished some 700 years later, the Olympieion became the great temple that can be seen at present, which has a length of 108 meters and a width of 43 meters. Regarded as among the largest temples in the world of ancient structures, the Olympieion is also called as the Kolonnes or the Columns. This is because of the Pentelic columns which are made of marble that support the temple. Standing 17 meters high, these columns have added on to the impressiveness of the temple being one of the attractions in Athens.
