Most visitors in Athens head straight for the Acropolis to see the Parthenon. But if you are lodged in a budget hotel near the Benaki Museum in Athens, you will find that there are other treasures awaiting you. Atonis Benakis (1873 – 1954) came from a wealthy Greek family. In 1931 he founded the Benaki Museum, which is now housed in his elegant Neo-Classical mansion at the corner of Koumpari and Vassilisis in Central Athens North.

Visitors who come from discount hotels in Athens near the Benaki Museum will find a diverse collection of Greek art, crafts, paintings, jewellery, folk costumes, and political memorabilia that spans a period of over 5000 years, from the Neolithic Age to the 20th century. One of the museum’s most prized possessions is the Icon of St. Anne, a 15th century painting that shows St. Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary, holding Mary as a child. Another world famous attraction is the El Faiyum Portrait. This is a Hellenistic portrait of a man, painted on linen, that dates from the 3rd century AD. Among the other priceless exhibits are a 17th century gold Ship Pendant from the island of Patmos, a beautifully embroidered 18th century Bridal Cushion from Epirus, an intricately carved piece of wooden paneling from 18th century Macedonia, and a 17th century silver Ciborium from Turkey. The museum’s third floor concentrates on the Greek War of Independence from the Ottoman Empire, and modern Greek cultural and political life.
