University of Athens

Formerly known as the Othonian University, the National and Capodistrian University of Athens was founded on May 3, 1837. It was not only the first university in Greece but also in the Eastern Mediterranean and all of the Balkans as well. There were four faculties that constituted the old educational framework of the university, and these are Law, Arts, Theology and Medicine. The university had only 52 students at that time, and it was housed in the home of architect Stamatis Kleanthes. Now, with thousands of students, the University of Athens has not only retained its worldwide popularity, but it has also become one of the most populous schools in Greece. This makes coming here one of the more interesting things to do in Athens.
