Marathonas, also known as Marathon, was the site for the 490 BC Battle of Marathon. This historic battle had the Athenian army vastly outnumbered by the Persians, but proving victorious, having lost just 192 soldiers. These soldiers are buried at The Tymbos near the battleground. The Tymbos is marked by a marble memorial stele, and surrounding the site is a small park. Definitely a must-stop spot for any history buff visiting Greece.
