It’s worth visiting the nearby Zoodochos Pigi Monastery, the largest monastery on the island, perhaps dating back to the Byzantine era. Among the other Andros attractions are the Agios Petros Tower overlooking Gavrio, the Archeological Museum of Paleopoli, and Faneromeni Castle (also called the Pano Kastro or Upper Castle) near Kochylou. From the island’s main port at Gavrio, ferries leave for Rafina on the mainland (a 30-minute drive from Athens International Airport) and for other islands in the Cyclades.
