Livadia Hotels and Accommodation
EasyToBook.com offers you the opportunity to stay at one of the discount hotels in Livadia, on one of the most unspoiled of the Greek islands. The Dodecanese island of Tilos is considered to be a hidden jewel, which has remained relatively unaffected by mass tourism and has changed little over the years. Although August tends to see an influx of visitors from Athens into the local hotels, the island in general offers a much more traditional and sedate view of Greek life than many other places. Livadia is the principal port on Tilos, an island which measures approximately 63 square kilometers. Although it looks somewhat rugged along its coastline, it shelters groves of figs, walnuts and olives further inland and offers some beautiful beaches, as well as many opportunities for walking and sightseeing.
Livadia is one of only two villages on the island, each with a population of around 300. The other is Megalo Chorio, which lies 6kms inland and sits below the splendid Fortress of Misaria, a medieval building dating back to 1366. At the foot of the fortress, you can see the remains of several small churches from the 13th and 15th centuries, as well as of a Byzantine settlement. Nine kilometers west of Megalo Chorio, can be found the Monastery of Agios Pandeleimon, named after the protector of the island, surrounded by an evergreen garden. The building includes a tower, the cells and warehouses and other rooms which served the monastery. Three kilometers from your hotel in Livadia is situated Mikro Chorio, a village which, until the 1950s was fully inhabited, but now lies eerily deserted. The inhabitants began to move into Livadia at around this time, until only one old woman remained. She stayed alone in the village until her death in 1974, and the village has remained abandoned every since.
