Opened in 1977, the Rhodos International Airport, which is also known locally as the Diagoras, is located 14 kilometres to the southwest of Rhodes City, which is the capital of the Rodos. Located near the Paradisi village, the airport is known to be a great contributor to the tourism of Rodos. When it comes to total volume of passengers, it ranks third among the busiest airports in Greece.
The Rhodos International Airport had a total area of 31,000 square meters, and this was doubled with an expansion project that was completed at the end of 2005. This expansion was meant to improve the services of charter airlines. Operating every day of the entire year, the airport has all the facilities that will cater to the needs of its passengers. These include duty-free shops, car hires, parking spaces outside the terminal building, banks and cafes. As a contributor to the tourism of Rodos, there are scheduled flights connecting Rhodes to the other cities and islands all over Greece, and it also serves as the charted hub for most of the big European cities as well as some Arabic cities.
