The Cyclades island of Tinos is the location of the village of Eretria. Both modern buildings and ancient ruins characterize the town and many of the Eretria hotels give views of old foundations and other partial remains. It is easy for tourists to immerse themselves in history when visiting Eretria. There is a museum which contains many Roman artifacts and an ancient theatre built into the plains north of town. Nearby are the remains of the temple of Dionysus as well as what is left of one of the gates in the town’s walls. Within walking distance is the Gymnasion, which also contains a bath house. The Khalkís Museum contains a sculpture which came from the pediments of the temple of Apollo Daphnephoros. There is much to see and do here so pack your walking shoes and plan on spending time with the remains of antiquity.
