Chania is the capital of the Greek prefecture of the same name and part of the Cretan Islands. This city is both modern and historical at the same time and contains four quarters of historic origin (Plaza, Ovriaki, Kastelli, and Sandrivani) as well as stone-paved alleys and buildings of traditional architecture. With its origins from Neolithic times, there are many important historical and archaeological landmarks to explore. The Fortress of Firkas lies in the Topanas section of town, while the Venetian Church of Saint Francis is located in the Jewish Ovriaki quarter. Retorre’s Palazzo, in the ancient Kastelli Quarter, is where the Pasha lived during Turkish rule of the town. In the Splantza, or Plaza Quarter, one can find the Church of Saint Nicholas, the Greek Orthodox Church of Agioi Anargyroi and the small Venetian Church of Saint Rocco. There are also Turkish Baths and the Municipal Garden which attract tourists from all over the world, as well as many other attractions.
